Garand Match

Contact(s): Curt Balaski

A Garand Match is a rifle shooting event centered around the historic M1 Garand, the semi-automatic service rifle used by the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War. These matches are designed to be approachable for new shooters while honoring traditional marksmanship skills. Participants typically shoot from a variety of positions—such as prone, sitting, and standing—at paper targets placed at known distances. The focus is on accuracy, safety, and learning proper shooting fundamentals rather than speed or competition alone.

For newcomers, a Garand Match is an excellent introduction to organized rifle shooting. Many clubs welcome shooters who may not own a Garand by allowing the use of similar rifles or providing guidance on equipment. Courses of fire are usually straightforward and well-explained, with experienced members available to help new participants understand range commands, scoring, and safe firearm handling. The atmosphere tends to be friendly and instructional, making it a great first step into the shooting sports.

Beyond the shooting itself, Garand Matches celebrate history and camaraderie. Shooters often appreciate the connection to the past that comes from using a classic rifle in a traditional format. Whether you’re interested in improving your marksmanship, learning something new, or simply enjoying time at the range with others, a Garand Match offers a welcoming and rewarding experience.
